In School Speech Obama Avoids Political Issues

Sout, David. "In School Speech Obama Avoids Political Issues." 8. Sept. 2009. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/08/us/politics/08speech.html?_r=1&hp

The article written by David Stout talks about the kind of message President Obama is going to give students Tuesday September 8 during school. He shares personal stories about his own education, and is going to stress the importance of trying in school. The article also talks about the concern there has been as far as Obama's decision to address a speech to young students, rather then the actual content of his speech.

I can understand parents initial concern for this speech. There has been a lot of controversy over Obama's political platform, of course parents who are against his agenda would be against him specifically addressing their children! Now that the content of his speech has been released, and that the "letter to the President" has been taken off the lesson manual, parents are calming down. I simply don't understand why we were going to be asked "what we could do for our president" in the first place. Why do we need to do anything for our president? Our focus should NOT be on him, but rather our country and our fellow citizens.
